Opening a Bank Account

Opening a bank account is necessary to receive remittances from home. Scholarships and payments from employment are also deposited into your bank account in most cases. It is convenient to set up automatic payments for electricity, water and gas bills from your account so that you do not forget to pay them. To open a bank account, a resident card and a personal seal must be prepared. (Your signature will be OK with some banks. Please check with your bank for details.) If you do not have a personal seal, you can make one at an inkan / hanko shop. Decide on what katakana you wish to use for your name. Any inexpensive personal seal will do.
