The Discrete Element Method (DEM) models the movement and interaction of assemblies of discrete particles. My main research is numerical modeling, also development of new scheme in regard to the DEM and coupling with thermal uid. One of the applications is a particle ow simulation of gas hydrate in a vertical duct to examine ow assurance of a natural gas production system by gas hydrate, which is expected to a new energy resource embedded under seabed and widely distributed around Japan. The scheme is applicable to many engineering fields, such as mechanical, geo-mechanical, also scientic elds.ResearchAreasInterdisciplinary science and engineeringKeyword■Numerical Modeling■Discrete Element Method■Coupling Scheme■SimulationRelatedresearchSDGComputer Science - Numerical Modeling via Particle Methods with Thermal-Fluid Coupling and Simulations -ProfessorYoshiyuki ShimizuUndergraduate School of Marine Science and TechnologyDepartment of Navigation and Ocean Engineering - Ocean Engineering courseMy research interest is underwater technology from subsea to surface. My work used to be related to offshore oil/gas development like shape control of deep water riser or automated installation of subsea structures. Recently, my main interest shifted to development of low cost ocean environment observation system using a combination of autonomous aerial, surface and underwater vehicles. We call the system as sky to water system, whose key concept is the UAV transports a USV which contains a UUV inside. The UUV's underwater position is determined by the oating LBL, which consists of GNSS and ultrasound acoustic links.ResearchAreasEngineeringKeyword■Underwater technology■Underwater robotics■Subsea oil/gas/mining■Coastal sea environment■Smart aquacultureRelatedresearchSDGResearch on development of a total autonomous system with combination of unmanned aerial, surface, underwater vehiclesProfessorKeisuke WatanabeUndergraduate School of Marine Science and TechnologyDepartment of Navigation and Ocean Engineering - Ocean Engineering course102
