The increase in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress following spinal cord injury exacerbates the apoptosis of neural cells. We have found that enhancing the ER stress response through the drug exenatide, which is clinically used to treat diabetes, we can ameliorate apoptosis and improve functional recovery. We are currently researching the pathways and mechanisms through which this improvement is brought about, and have found modulation of the inammatory response and improved integrity of the blood spinal cord barrier.ResearchAreasMedicine, dentistry, and pharmacyKeyword■Spinal cord injury■Endoplasmic reticulum stress■Cervical myelopathy□Spine trauma□Spine surgeryRelatedresearchSDGThe enhancement of the endoplasmic reticulum stress response improves recovery after spinal cord injuryJunior Associate ProfessorHiroyuki KatohUndergraduate School of MedicineFaculty of Medicine Surgical Science CourseCurrently Western medicine is the mainstream of medical treatment. But, in recent years, complementary and alternative medicine has become widespread worldwide. In Japan, most doctors use Kampo (Japanese traditional) medicine. However, as Kampo medicine is not yet nationally standardized, because of its many sub-streams, the current Kampo education is not satisfactory. Therefore, it is necessary to properly promote Kampo medicine, by spreading it throughout the world, and continuously educate doctors who can practice "Japanese-style integrated medicine" to further integrate Western and Kampo medicine. Medical schools, as the proprietors of medical education, must take the initiative to properly and adequately reform Kampo medical education.ResearchAreasMedicine, dentistry, and pharmacyKeyword■Kampo medicine□Japanese-style integrated medicine□Kampo education□Medicinal plantRelatedresearchSDGEducation of Kampo (Japanese Traditional) MedicineProfessorMakoto AraiUndergraduate School of MedicineFaculty of Medicine Specialized Clinical Science CourseOvarian cancer is the seventh most common malignancy in women worldwide. As women with ovarian cancer often lack specic symptoms, a large number of aected women present with advanced stage disease, wherein survival rates are dismal. Hence, the early detection of ovarian cancer is an urgent unmet need in women’s healthcare. To date, useful biomarkers for screening of ovarian cancer remain scarce. We developed the comprehensive serum glycopeptide spectra analysis (CSGSA)—considering the diagnostic accuracy—for detecting early stage epithelial ovarian cancer. CSGSA evaluates >10,000 serum glycopeptides and identifies unique peaks and patterns of glycopeptides.ResearchAreasMedicine, dentistry, and pharmacyKeyword□Ovarian Cancer□Early detection■Serum biomarker■Glycoproteomics■Deep learningRelatedresearchSDGUtility of Comprehensive Serum Glycopeptide Spectra Analysis (CSGSA) for the Detection of Early Stage Epithelial Ovarian CancerProfessorMikio MikamiUndergraduate School of MedicineFaculty of Medicine Specialized Clinical Science Course117
