TOKAI UNIVERSITY Researchers Guide 2020

My research interest has been the promotion of coherent “English education from primary to tertiary” in relation to “pre-service teacher education.” While conducting a fact-nding survey on teacher training in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, Korea, and Taiwan for many years, the notion of “global literacy” or “intercultural communicative competence” as part of general capabilities for Japanese learners of English has been key in my exploration of ways to better the current situation. I have also designed English courses using the framework of CLIL and the SDGs in order to help learners evaluate the world they live in and interact in a range of cultural contexts.ResearchAreasHumanitiesKeyword■Coherent English Education■Teacher Education■Global Literary■CLIL■ESD & SDGsRelatedresearchSDGSDGs and CLIL Lesson Designs to Get EFL Learners to Think Globally, Act LocallyProfessorMika ItoCenter / Research Institute, etc.International Education Center English Language SectionMy first specializaiton is language testing and assessment, and I've been involved in creating some outside tests while doing research on many existing tests, especially those for performance (writing and speaking) and those that assess integrated-skills of English. I've been also doing professional training for language assessment literacy. The second and more recent focus of research has been raising intercultural competence and global skills of Japanese students. For this, I've been involved in various projects to develop programs and curricula aiming at teaching these skills to Japanese students at dierent educational levels (from elementary school to adult education), which include the creation of objectives, teaching materials and assessment tools.ResearchAreasHumanitiesKeyword■Language Assessment□Language Education Methods□Sociolinguistics■Intercultural Competence■Global Citizenship EducationRelatedresearchSDG1) Development and validation of English tests, especially research on various methods of performance assessment2) Creation and validation of curricula and teaching materials to raise intercultural competence and global skills of Japanese studentsProfessorKahoko MatsumotoCenter / Research Institute, etc.International Education Center English Language SectionCenter / Research Institute, etc.International Education Center English Language SectionObjective: to validate a mixed reality (MR) based, second language teaching activities that allow learners from around the world to interact intuitively in real-time.ResearchAreasHumanitiesKeyword■Technology enhanced learning(TEL)■Linguistics■Self-directed learning■Learning analytics■InternationalizationRelatedresearchSDGThe development of mixed reality language teachings tasks for international collaboration Junior Associate ProfessorDavid Patrick Wright"An Intercultural-understanding classroom at an elementary school" 136
