Resident Card

The resident card will be provided at the international airport upon your arrival. You must return the resident card when you go back to your country except for a short return.

Registration of Residency

All foreign nationals who receive legal residency in Japan must register their residence at their local municipal office. When leaving Japan permanently, you must return your resident card.

Re-entry Permit System

Researchers who will be reentering Japan within 1 year of their departure to continue his/her research in Japan will not be required to apply for a re-entry permit.

Medical Care (Japanese National Health Insurance)

International students are obliged to register for National Health Insurance. If you buy the National Insurance, you can receive an immediate 70% reduction in medical costs. Go to the municipal office of the area where you live to apply for insurance. You will need your resident card.
