理学部数学科では６月23、24日の両日、タイ王国のモンクット王ラカバン工科大学（KMITL）と共同で「第６回数学・応用数学シンポジウム」を札幌キャンパスで開催しました。２日間で両大学の教員や研究者、大学院生など約30名が参加しました。本学とKMITLは1965年から教育研究で活発に交流を続けており、400名以上の留学生が本学で学ぶとともに、多くの研究者が本学から派遣されています。本シンポジウムも両大学の交流活動の一環で、研究者が知識や経験を共有して議論を深めることを目的に2003年から不定期に開催しています。過去５回はKMITLと本学湘南キャンパスで開いており、今回初めて札幌キャンパスでの実施となりました。
シンポジウムでは、両大学の研究者が両日で計18の研究について発表。それぞれに質疑応答も行い、活発に意見を交換しました。KMITL数学科主任のカンチャナ・カムヌンキット准教授は、「２日間を通じて東海大学との研究交流をさらに発展させることができたと思います。将来的には両大学の学生も参加できるようにしたい」と今後への期待を語りました。また、運営にあたった本学科の前田陽一教授と札幌キャンパスにある生物学部生物学科のサバウ・バシレ・ソリン教授は、「日本とタイでは国による数学分野への研究支援の在り方が違うこともあり、タイの研究者は応用数学に関する研究に取り組んでいる方が多く感じました。本学側の発表を通じて基礎数学の重要性を認識していただけたのではないかと思います。シンポジウムは今後も継続し、じっくりと両大学の数学研究の発展につなげていきたい」と語りました。
