Dr. Kyoko Ichikawa, Junior associate professor of School of Health Studies, is organizing a symposium on 30 October entitled “Accelerating Progress and Equity in Education:
How Can We Create Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education in Japan ?” (Cosponsored by Konrad Adenauer Foundation and CSO Network Japan)
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the weakness of a safe and supportive environment for children and education in Japan. However, how can we address this weakness?
In order to achieve the SDGs’ goal of “quality education for all”, it is necessary to address educational and social inequality in Japan. We will discuss the transformation, new systems, and new ways of collaboration to create a symbiotic society in the post-COVID-19 society.

In this session, we will discuss the role of teachers in a post-COVID 19 society from the perspectives of three stakeholders: teachers, boards of education, and NPOs, focusing on the following points with speakers and participants:
1) What each stakeholder is doing to achieve the SDGs, challenges in implementation, and efforts to solve those challenges.
2) How do you envision the role of “teachers” in the implementation of the new Courses of Study and the GIGA school concept?

The Role of Civil Society in Education for Respect for Diversity and Human Rights
In realizing an inclusive and fair society, education that respects diversity and human rights is necessary. In recent years, there have been various efforts by civil society to deal with the increasing number of children with foreign roots, developmental disabilities, LGBTQ, and other diverse children. In this session, after confirming the importance of civil society in respecting diversity and human rights, we will review the current status of inclusive education through case studies of NPOs and local organizations active in the field, and discuss its challenges and prospects.
